Whether in your studies, a real-life (ECIU) challenge or in your future career, the need to develop your intercultural competences and become able to work with anyone and anywhere in the world is becoming more and more important. Being connected with other countries and other cultures can provide you with wonderful opportunities for collaboration and new and refreshing insights. To accommodate such creative collaboration, it is important to make sure you have the right tools for effective teamwork in multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary groups. With this course, you will gain practical insights into intercultural competences by creating your own Citizen Science project! During this micro-module, you will learn to better understand and work within diverse groups, how to improve on your communicative skills and create an effective team, and how you can apply and present your solutions in a broad variety of contexts.

The whole world is confronted with the effects of a changing climate. The challenge is how we deal with this situation. So how big is the problem in the city under study? What is at risk, and why? What is being done? What will happen if nothing is done? What would be the effect of adaptation measures?

In this course we follow the conceptual framework on risk defined by IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, www.ipcc.ch), where risk is at the centre. [Figure 1](https://www.ipcc.ch/report/managing-the-risks-of-extreme-events-and-disasters-to-advance-climate-change-adaptation/summary-for-policymakers/spm_fig1/) presents this framework, where three core concepts of weather and climate, exposure and vulnerability interact (IPCC, 2014). The risk of climate-related impacts results from the interaction of climate-related hazards (including weather and climatic events and their trends) with the vulnerability and exposure of human and natural systems. Changes in both the climate system (left) and socioeconomic processes including adaptation and mitigation (right) are drivers for changes in hazard, exposure, and vulnerability (IPCC, 2014).

There are options for risk reduction through adaptation, because adaptation measures can reduce risk by addressing one or more of the three risk factors: vulnerability, exposure, and/or hazard.This can be achieved through various policy and action choices. The three core concepts of hazard, exposure and vulnerability can be linked to the three core domains of Spatial Engineering: Hazard - Technical Engineering, Vulnerability - Spatial Information Science, and Exposure - Spatial Planning and Governance.

**May 1st: Welcome @ University of Twente**

We will welcome you and your fellow ECIU students on Monday evening, the 1st of May. The first evening is just to get to know each other a little bit and have some drinks and bites. 

**May 2nd-3rd: Create Tomorrow!**

And then… it all starts! Tuesday the 2nd of May and Wednesday the 3rd of May is Create Tomorrow. Get ready for workshops to follow and interesting keynote speakers to listen to on the first day. While working on real challenges from actual companies with your team on the second day, it is possible to ask questions and talk to your challenge provider all day. Throughout this day, there will be speakers and entertainment performing on stage. After the winner is announced, it is time for the after-party. Excited about the idea of joining? **May 4th: Twente Experience**

For you, as ECIU students, this is however not the end of it all. On Thursday, we will gather once more and you will get to know the campus of the University of Twente and its surroundings a little better. After lunch, there will be an interesting workshop. 

**May 5th: Liberation Festival (optional)**

The official program will end on Thursday. However, if you want, you can stick around a little longer. Friday the 5th of May is Liberation Day in the Netherlands. Therefore, there will be a festival on campus. For more information and tickets, click here. Be quick, since it is often sold out beforehand! If you want to stay in the Netherlands on Friday night, you’ll have to book an accommodation yourself, as it’s not included in our offer.

**Practical information**

- We will take care of sleeping accommodation from May 1st until the morning of the 5th, free of charge for you. However, you need to bring your own sleeping bag and pillow case because you will sleep in cabins. Beds and pillows are present. Bring your power banks as well, since there are only a few sockets.

- Our campus is smoke-free, which also goes for the cabins and surroundings.

- Lunch will be provided on Wednesday the 3rd and Thursday the 4th of May.

- Dinner will be provided during both days of Create Tomorrow.

- ECIU University is all about international cooperation. An average of 4 ECIU students per partner could receive a financial contribution of 200 euros each. You will be contacted by the officer responsible at your university if you are among the students selected for the contribution.

- You can sign up for Create Tomorrow as a team, as a duo or as an individual. ECIU will cover the registration fee for Create Tomorrow. You need to register through this challenge page and not through the website of Create Tomorrow.
- Since we will cover a lot of your costs, you will be charged with these costs in case you do not join the whole program after signing up. You can cancel your application until March 29th.

Nanotechnology has a vital role to play in current sustainable development. Nanotechnology can accelerate progress through technological solutions, including clean water/soil/air and sanitation, to affordable and clean energy solutions and products that fulfil the united nations' sustainable development goals. Multidisciplinary is a key factor, a toolset that contains skills that will allow students to provide solutions to our current society's problems. This is a significant challenge that citizens of the entire world must face and join forces working together within a multidisciplinary context toward developing sustainable solutions and products.  

In this collaborative online international learning (COIL) course, international teams will join forces to create green and eco-friendly nanotechnological solutions. In this case, the development of a sustainable product will be based on four critical pillars:

1. Water purification, remediation, and reuse;
2. Air purification;
3. Soil remediation, and;
4. Energy.

The acquired knowledge is practised using the learned concepts while developing sustainable solutions and products. During product development, life cycle analysis and recyclability aspects will be applied. The course uses a challenge-based approach, requiring students to work together to solve problems and learn how to collaborate with individuals from different cultural backgrounds.

Circular economy

The UN's eleventh sustainable development goal (SDG-11) aims at creating sustainable cities and communities. Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) and University of Twente (UT) alongside ECIU University support this goal and, wants to contribute to a more sustainable future. Climate change is one of the major challenges facing global society. Extreme weather, such as droughts and heavy rain, are expected to increase with climate change, and as recent events show, expose unforeseen vulnerabilities. ECIU University can contribute in (at least two) ways to realizing the SDG by firstly reducing its carbon footprint, and secondly by providing technological solutions that help increase resilience to climate and weather extremes.  
  
Reducing the impact of climate change is a very important issue and one of the most discussed questions in politics and society. While climate change outpaces the current scientific understanding, new technology can offer opportunities to face the impact of climate change as well as contributing to making a more climate neutral world. ECIU University seeks for learners who take responsibility and shape a sustainable future with new mindsets, behaviours, ways of learning, thinking and working in support of new solutions, technologies and innovations.
