Our Challenge
How does artificial intelligence change the way we work with and manage our documentary heritage? Would you like to work with a real archive of 2,200 digitized fanzines — self-published in Spain mainly between 1970 and 2000 — and apply cutting-edge tools to explore images and texts in a critical and creative way? This challenge invites you to dive into the world of fanzines and DIY publishing, and to rethink our cultural heritage using state-of-the-art technologies. You’ll learn how to analyze visual materials with AI, identify hidden biases and narratives, and collaborate with cultural institutions in an interdisciplinary project that culminates in a dynamic, hands-on sprint: the Deep Scan Sprint in Barcelona. Apply AI tools to analyze digitized print collections
At the end of the course, the learner will be able to use accessible AI-based tools (e.g., image recognition, tagging, clustering, OCR) to analyze and manage digitized collections of cultural value, such as fanzines.

Reflect on the biases of AI in curating countercultural memory
Learners will critically examine how automated systems shape our understanding of self-published and countercultural materials, exploring the cultural, ethical, and political consequences of algorithm-driven visibility and exclusion.

Learners will be able to plan and execute a basic workflow using AI technologies to study a large digitized fanzine collection, integrating technical processes with contextual and critical interpretation.
